What Does Your Anxiety Need?
A common misconception is that all anxious people need is a “little peace and quiet". But have you ever felt anxious, sat and meditated, and then felt worse? Yeah, it happens! Because sometimes our anxious minds need stimuli rather than stillness. Hypoarousal occurs when our body becomes overwhelmed and we go into freeze mode. We may feel numb, withdrawn, dissociated, or unable to act. We may need to increase our activity when in hypo-mode. Alternatively, hyperarousal is overstimulated, and can cause our bodies to go into high alert and fight/flight mode.
Here’s a few tips to decipher what may be beneficial for your anxiety:
Hypoarousal: Goal is to get activated and energized
A short high intensity workout that gets your heart moving and mind off a topic (jumping jacks, running in place)
Cooking a meal with lots of fragrance and strong flavors
Cold water: shower, drink a cold drink, hold an ice cube, take a walk in brisk weather
Dancing!
Loud music
Punch the air or push against the wall
Note: I think some of these tips can also be helpful when we’re agitated/angry and need a safe place to put our energy!
Hyperarousal: Goal is to calm down and relax
Lay with a weighted blanket
Cuddle pets
Breathing techniques or a short guide meditation
Relaxing music and nature soundtracks
Warm herbal tea
Warm bath
Reminding yourself that you are safe in the present in all of these situations is a great mantra.
